What is Conscious Sedation?
Sedation Dentistry, sometimes called Relaxation Dentistry, refers to the way dentist's manage anxiety during dental appointments. Patients under Conscious Sedation are able to respond to commands and breath on their own.
Conscious Sedation can be achieved through oral administration (pill) or intravenously (IV).
IV Sedation
IV Sedation also known as Deep Conscious Sedation is can be administered by Dr. Drummer who has specialized training and special certification. With this type of sedation, medications are administered directly into the blood stream. The greatest advantage of IV Sedation is that if someone is not sedated enough, the doctor can administer more medication and the effects are instantaneous.
IV Sedation is only used in dental offices where the doctor has received advanced training and has met the requirements for certification by the State Board of Dentistry. The drugs used for IV Sedation are more effective then the same drugs taken orally. There is a more profound amnesia associated with this technique.
When you arrive for your procedure, the doctor will consult with you regarding your medical history and spend some time explaining exactly how he will administer your IV sedation and what you can expect, before, during and after your procedure.
Oral Sedation
Oral Conscious Sedation "Orally Administered Sedation", is administered by taking a pill. All body functions remain normal and the person is able to breath on their own. The patient will often fall asleep. Some degree of amnesia is common.
This form of sedation may be preferred by those patients with a fear of needles. One hour before your dental procedure you will take a single pill that was provided to you prior to your dental visit. A friend or family member will need to drive you to the dental office and pick you up after your office visit.

*Oral and IV sedation will reduce anxiety but may not provide complete pain relief so an injection of a local anesthetic is usually administered in conjunction with either method of conscious sedation.
